This report compiles data from six sources, three market-research firms, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Solvo Index's own pest control research, to size the U.S. home services industry, track how homeowner spending has moved since 2019, and count the businesses and workers behind the underlying trades. Every figure below was checked directly against its original source in September 2026. Where estimates conflict, both are shown rather than one being picked as the answer. That's the same disclosure standard Solvo Index applies to its own verified and self-reported data.
Marketdata LLC publishes the longest-running estimate of this market, with figures tracked back to 2007, across nine service categories. Pest control, one of those nine, is also the only category Solvo Index has published regional research for so far; the geographic breakdown appears further below.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Total market value (2025) | $543.0 billion |
| Forecast CAGR (2025–2030) | 5.3% |
| Implied market value (2030, calculated) | ≈$703 billion |
| HVAC & plumbing contractors, share of revenue | 26% |
| Landscaping, share of revenue | 25% |
| Remaining seven segments combined* | 49% |
*Pest control, maid/housekeeping, carpet cleaning, appliance repair, home security, roofing, and electrical contractors combined. Source: Marketdata LLC (Marketdata Enterprises), “U.S. Home Services Market Worth $543 Billion,” January 30, 2026. The implied 2030 figure applies Marketdata's own published 5.3% compound annual growth rate to its 2025 base value; Marketdata did not publish a 2030 total directly.
Two more research firms publish current estimates of the same market. Both are legitimate, sourced figures, and neither agrees closely with Marketdata's or with each other, because each report scopes “home services” differently.
| Research Firm | Base-Year Estimate | Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Marketdata LLC | $543.0 billion (2025) | 5.3%/year through 2030 |
| Mordor Intelligence | $842.04 billion (2026) | $989.22 billion by 2031 (3.27%/year) |
| Expert Market Research | $97.16 billion (2025) | $194.73 billion by 2035 (7.20%/year) |
Marketdata LLC scopes the market to nine categories: HVAC & plumbing, pest control, maid/housekeeping, carpet cleaning, landscaping, appliance repair, home security, roofing, and electrical contractors. Mordor Intelligence's larger figure also folds in remodeling, smart-home installation, and subscription service plans. Expert Market Research scopes its figure to home cleaning and repair-and-maintenance services booked through both online platforms and offline providers. None of the three reports defines the category the same way, which is why their totals can't be reconciled into a single number.
The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies tracks total homeowner spending on improvement and repair projects nationally. It's a different measure of the same broad activity than the professional-services revenue figures above: total spending, materials included, not industry revenue.
| Year | Total National Spending |
|---|---|
| 2019 | $404 billion |
| 2022 | $611 billion |
| 2023–2025 | Remained above $600 billion each year |
Source: Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, Improving America's Housing 2025, March 20, 2025. Figures are JCHS tabulations of the American Housing Survey and cover homeowner-paid improvement and repair spending nationwide. The same report found homeowners spent an average of almost $4,700 on improvements in 2023, and that the national owner-occupied housing stock reached a median age of 44 years that year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks licensed plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, and similar trade contractors as their own industry classification, the closest government-verified count of the businesses and workers behind a large share of home services work.
| Metric | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Private-industry establishments | 597,918 | Q1 2026 |
| All employees | 5,276,700 | August 2026 |
| Production & nonsupervisory employees | 4,069,900 | July 2026 |
| Average hourly earnings, all employees | $40.29 | July 2026 |
| Average weekly hours | 39.2 | July 2026 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Specialty Trade Contractors: NAICS 238,” Industries at a Glance. NAICS 238 covers licensed plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, painting, and similar trade contractors serving both residential and commercial properties. It does not include landscaping, pest control, cleaning, or appliance-repair businesses, which fall under separate classifications not reported at the same level of detail.
None of the estimates above break down to the regional level. Solvo Index's own pest control research does, and shows how much documentation a single home services category actually requires to score companies individually rather than estimate a market from the top down.
| Region | Companies Researched | Companies Scored & Ranked |
|---|---|---|
| Boston Metro, MA | 78 | 78 |
| Cape Cod, MA | 32 | 21 |
| Plymouth, MA | 22 | 1 |
| Total (3 hubs) | 132 | 100 |
Source: Solvo Index Research, September 2026, compiled from the Boston Metro, Cape Cod, and Plymouth, MA pest control hubs. As Solvo Index's own original research, these figures are self-reported by the publisher of this article and have not been independently verified by a third party. Pest control is one of four home services categories Solvo Index tracks; roofing, paving, and masonry contractor research was still onboarding as of September 2026, with no comparable counts published yet.
